1967年11月30日，在原有的英属南阿拉伯联邦基础上建立起“南也门人民共和国”，1970年更名为“也门民主人民共和国”，建立了中东第一个也是唯一一个社会主义国家。于1979年起使用《南也门国歌》（暂称）。这首国歌是日后统一后的也门《联合共和国》的雏形。1990年5月22日，南北也门实现统一，原国歌经删改歌词后，成为统一后的也门的国歌。
