故事发生在1800年左右，出身于农家的下级军官唐·霍赛，在吉普赛烟草女工卡门的诱惑下，堕入情网，成了走私贩。过了些时候，卡门对唐·霍赛冷淡起来，她爱上了斗牛士埃斯卡米罗。霍赛的妒忌，使卡门烦恼。他干涉她爱情上的自由，她被这种干涉所激怒，于是与他绝交了。
后来，在一次群众对埃斯卡米罗斗牛获胜的欢呼声中，霍赛刺杀了卡门。
剧中刻画了卡门热情泼辣、酷爱自由的性格。
音乐多用舞蹈歌曲及分节歌，具有强烈的戏剧性和西班牙风格。
比才，又名比捷（1838－1875）法国作曲家。他出生于巴黎，四岁开始随母学钢琴，九岁入巴黎音乐学院。
1857年十九岁的比捷以钢琴家兼作曲家的身份，毕业于巴黎音乐学院，并获得罗马基金去意大利进修三年。
1863年比才写成第一部歌剧《采珍珠者》，以后主要从事歌剧写作，作品有《卡门序曲》、《阿莱城姑娘》等。
在他的作品中现实主义得到深化，社会底层的平民小人物成为作品的主角。在音乐中他把鲜明的民族色彩，富有表现力的描绘生活冲突的交响发展，以及法国的喜歌剧传统的表现手法熔于一炉，创造了十九世纪法国歌剧的最高成就。
歌剧《卡门》取材于梅里美同名小说
《卡门序曲》管弦乐曲，是法国作曲家比才于1874年创作的歌剧《卡门》中的前奏曲。开始呈示的快板主题选自歌剧第四幕斗牛士上场时的音乐，生气勃勃、充满活力，表现了斗牛士英武潇洒的形象和斗牛场内兴奋活跃的气氛。
由于它带有进行曲特点，故又称《斗牛士进行曲》。它是埃斯卡米罗所歌唱的咏叹调，广为传唱。
接下来乐曲从A大调转为F大调，出现第二幕中《斗牛士之歌》的副歌音调，具有凯旋进行曲特点，坚定有力的节奏和威武雄壮的曲调表现了斗牛士的飒爽英姿。
